God, the Devil, and Darwin by Niall Shanks,

God, the Devil, and Darwin by Niall Shanks,
In the last fifteen years a controversial new theory of the origins of biological complexity and the nature of the universe has been fomenting bitter debates in education and science policy across North America, Europe, and Australia. Backed by intellectuals at respectable universities, Intelligent Design theory (ID) proposes an alternative to accepted accounts of evolutionary theory: that life is so complex, and that the universe is so fine-tuned for the appearance of life, that the only plausible explanation is the existence of an intelligent designer. For many ID theorists, the designer is taken to be the god of Christianity. Niall Shanks has written the first accessible introduction to, and critique of, this controversial new intellectual movement. Shanks locates the growth of ID in the last two decades of the twentieth century in the growing influence of the American religious right. But as he shows, its roots go back beyond Aquinas to Ancient Greece. After looking at the historical roots of ID, Shanks takes a hard look at its intellectual underpinnings, discussing modern understandings of thermodynamics, and how self-organizing processes lead to complex physical, chemical, and biological systems. He considers cosmological arguments for ID rooted in so-called "anthropic coincidences" and also tackles new biochemical arguments for ID based on "irreducible biological complexity." Throughout he shows how arguments for ID lack cohesion, rest on errors and unfounded suppositions, and generally are grossly inferior to evolutionary explanations. While ID has been proposed as a scientific alternative to evolutionary biology, Shanks argues that ID is in fact "old creationist wine in newdesigner label bottles" and moreover is a serious threat to the scientific and democratic values that are our cultural and intellectual inheritance from the Enlightenment.

The Programmer's Guide to SCSI with CDROM by Brian Sawert,
The Programmer's Guide to SCSI with CDROM by Brian Sawert,
Brian Sawert teaches the fundamentals of programming SCSI (Small Computer Systems Interface) devices. He relates the design philosophy behind the SCSI standard, including its evolution and variations. This book focuses on software development and addresses fundamental SCSI concepts such as how SCSI devices communicate, how commands are executed, how data is transferred, and the roles played by the initiator and the target.

ABSL - In computer technology, ABSL is the addressing that is used for SCSI environments. It stands for Adapter, Bus, Scsi-ID and LUN.

SCSI host adapter - A SCSI host adapter is a device used to connect one or more other SCSI devices to a computer bus. It is commonly called a SCSI controller, which is not strictly correct, as all SCSI devices have a SCSI controller built into them: the difference between a host adapter and another SCSI device such as a hard disk drive or CD-ROM is that the host adapter is responsible for transferring data between the SCSI bus and the computer's input/ ...

SCSI target - In SCSI computer storage, a target is the storage-device side endpoint of a SCSI session. SCSI initiators request data transfers from SCSI targets.

SCSI initiator - In SCSI computer storage, an initiator is the host-side endpoint of a SCSI session. SCSI initiators request data transfers from SCSI targets.

The host adapter usually assumes the role of "initiator," in that it issues commands to other SCSI devices. Typically a device driver, linked to the operating system, controls the host adapter itself. A computer can contain more than one host adapter, as an interface device, connects a SCSI device, but also facilitates configuration of the 8-bit or "narrow" bus). The host adapter appears as scsi id 7, which gives it the highest priority on the SCSI bus to a computer (the host). The host adapter bridges the physical and logical chasm that separates the SCSI bus from the host adapter usually assumes the role of "initiator," in that it issues commands to other SCSI devices.
